Our sourcing hierarchy
Every strain page on Smoke & Scroll is compiled from multiple authoritative sources. When sources disagree, we apply the following priority ladder and record the winning source as a citation on the page:
- Certified laboratory results (SC Labs, PSI Labs, and similar state-licensed testing labs)
- Academic and peer-reviewed datasets (the Cannabis Chemovar Database from Hazekamp et al., published chemotype studies)
- Public genetic databases (Medicinal Genomics’ Kannapedia)
- Established directories (publicly documented facts about lineage, effects, and flavors from long-running databases — never copied descriptive text)
- Historical seed datasets for the canonical list of strain names
How we use AI
Descriptive prose on strain pages — the overview, effects summary, and FAQ — is drafted by an AI writer using only the structured facts already present in our database. The AI is instructed to state only facts with a citation, to prefix subjective claims with “users report” or “anecdotally,” and never to make medical claims. Each page passes an automated quality check and at least 10% of every batch is reviewed by a human editor before publication.
What we don’t do
- We do not copy descriptive text from Leafly, Weedmaps, or other directories. Facts are not copyrightable; descriptive prose is.
- We do not claim any strain treats, cures, or prevents any disease.
- We do not accept payment to list, rank, or favor any specific strain, breeder, or dispensary.
Corrections
If you find an error on a strain page, or you’re a breeder, laboratory, or researcher who can provide primary-source data, please contact us. Corrections are published within 14 days, and updated pages record a new “last updated” date.
Updates and review cadence
Strain data is re-fetched from our primary sources monthly. New lab results and genetic reports are incorporated as they are published. We publish new strain pages in controlled batches of roughly 100 per day to allow proper quality review, not in bulk.
